While it’s only January of 2024, festivals and concerts work year-round to book acts, plan shows, and improve from the year before. Japan’s Summer Sonic, which is a two-day festival that happens in Tokyo and Osaka in August with acts changing locations each day, has something new for 2024. They are going overseas for the first time and heading to Bangkok, Thailand the weekend after the Japan dates.

On August 17 and 18, bands will play in Japan. Then, on the next weekend, August 24 and 25, they will head to Bangkok and play at IMPACT Arena, where the 50 Cent concert was held. In Japan, the shows are outside, but in Thailand since it’s the rainy season, the shows will be inside.

No acts have been announced yet, but with previous headliners like Kendrick Lamar, Post Malone, and Megan Thee Stallion, Hip Hop will be well-represented at the festival that gets up to 350,000 attendees per year. Summer Sonic creative director Naoki Shimizu said on the website, “Overseas festivals are spreading to various regions and achieving success, and Korean artists are active all over the world, so we are starting Summer Sonic Bangkok as a way for Japan to connect with the world through music. We aim to create an even more attractive and powerful lineup by booking great artists in both countries. Please look forward to seeing this light spread to other countries.”
