What were you doing when you were 14 years old? If you were DJ K-SWIZZ from New Zealand, you would have been in your room practicing beat juggling, scratching, and mixing for hours and hours to get ready to win a DJ battle world title in 2018. Fast forward to this past weekend five years later and DJ K-SWIZZ took on all competitors to win his second DMC title in a row at the DMC World Championships where he bested DJ Fummy [Japan] and Erick Jay [Brazil]. This takes K-SWIZZ’s total world titles up to 10!
With a stacked lineup including hosts DJ Babu and Rhettmatic from the Beat Junkies, Dilated Peoples, Mixmaster Mike getting a DMC Legend Lifetime Achievement Award, the Invisbl Skratch Piklz, and Japan’s Kentaro and Rena performing, the DMC World Championship was every turntablists’ wet dream as it was the first time it was hosted on West Coast in America in San Francisco.
Winning the DMCs takes a lot of time, patience, and skill, and by the time the battles are over, DJs don’t really want to touch a turntable for a while. With that said, K-SWIZZ now has the opportunity to join the rare air of only two DJs in history that have the title three years in a row, DJ Craze and DJ Skillz, if he decides to compete in Paris, France for the 2024 World Championship title.
