ILL MO pays tribute to 2Pac on his latest ‘與世為敵’
The Professor/MC got inspired while translating a book on the rapper
ILL MO has cared about Hip Hop in Taiwan since the early days. As one of Taiwan’s pioneering MCs, he’s one-third of the 參劈 TriPoets and an outstanding solo rapper. He was recently asked by Ark Culture to translate an authorized biography of the legendary 2Pac into Chinese. While researching and spending a lot of time with 2Pac’s words, ILL MO was motivated to channel the rapper and record his own song, “與世為敵,’ roughly translated as ‘Me Against the World.’
LiFTED caught up with ILL MO to ask a few questions about the project and what 2Pac means to him.
How did you get the gig translating the 2Pac book?
Ark Culture reached out to me and asked if I was interested in translating 2Pac’s authorized biography. The editor was a Hip Hop fan and knew I was the right person to do it. My schedule is very hectic with teaching many classes but we made it happen.
What did you learn about 2Pac that you didn’t know before?
His mother Afeni was a legend. I knew she was a black panther but never knew the important role she played in the party. I didn’t know about her defending herself in the Panther 21 case. I also learned many details about 2Pac. For example, he loved to cook, and he loved theater.
Is there a quote that 2Pac said or something he did that really means something to you?
“I'm not saying I'm gonna change the world, but I guarantee that I will spark the brain that will change the world.”
What’s your favorite Pac song? Why?
There are many because he’s very versatile, but my favorite at the moment is ‘Changes.’ You hear the struggle of African American males in the United States. It’s a call for change, and it’s very meaningful.
Where is 2pac on your Mount Rushmore of rappers? Why?
2Pac is definitely among the greats. I list him alongside Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z, and Andre 3000. He may not have the most clever wordplay or punchlines, but the emotion and passion in his voice can make you feel his soul.
Why did you decide to channel 2pac and record ‘與世為敵’?
To pay tribute. I felt inspired during the translation process and decided to do a West Coast type of record and adapt some of his signature flows and words in my rap to make it as noticeable as possible. I hope it somewhat serves as an extension of 2Pac’s spirit or a reintroduction of the greatness of 2Pac to the younger generation.
