Battle Rapper to Brand Ambassador: The Journey of Twopee Southside

From Phuket to the Pinnacle of Thai Hip Hop

LiFTED | Sean D | 14 Nov 2024

Twopee Southside has almost reached OG status in Thailand, and he’s still at the top of his game. He’s super active, releasing new heat, and collaborating with other Thai and international MCs. Last month he dropped a new single ‘Hurt My Heart’ with R&B crooners YENTED, and musically and professionally he’s breaking out in new directions.

Since his humble beginning in Phuket with the Southside crew, Twopee has gone on to be Thailand’s top battle rapper twice. With his bad boy good looks he’s become a heartthrob, too, repping brands from Adidas to Louis Vuitton.

This year we had him ranked number 13 in the LiFTED 50 top Asian rappers, and he’s rising. His IG boasts 1.7 Million followers who watch his every move, and he’s become a true ambassador of Thai Hip Hop. We’re very excited to finally sit down and chop it up with one of Asia’s biggest MCs, so let’s get it!

Yo Twopee, what’s good man? Excited to finally speak to you.

Likewise, I am very happy to talk to you too.

What was it like coming up in Phuket listening to Hip Hop?

The scene was small. We mostly wrote together at my house and we had a studio that we rented to record together called GT Studio.

Your original crew ‘Southside’ was big, like 9 or 10 guys right? Where would you work on your rhymes? Did you perform shows?

Yes, we all grew up when the Dirty South was very popular. Ludacris, T.I., and UGK were our inspirations. We named the group Southside Phuket because we wanted people to think of the South of Thailand and my hometown, Phuket. So it was not just the South as a genre, but we wanted to represent our hometown.

It was the real OGs THAITANIUM that first put you on, right? At that time was Southside just you and Freddy V?

Yes, it happened at the first Thaitanium show in Phuket. And that day me and FV did our first demo in the studio. We just headed over to the show and asked if we could open for them without knowing them at all.

What year did you move to Bangkok and start your solo career?

Around 2008. That was the start.

The ‘YMPL’ music video was shot in Bangkok and features Khan from Thaitanium plus BangBangBang. That track really blew up in 2015, was that your breakout hit? What does YMPL mean?

Yes! That was the best Hip Hop song of the year at the 2015 Rap is Now Awards. And the meaning comes from 4 Thai words ‘Young Mai Pod Loey’ which means ‘I don’t even say anything,’ but the whole song I just say everything, LOL. So it’s kinda like wordplay.

Since going solo you have become an influencer and worked with many brands. Your IG is bananas, reaching millions daily. Big brands don’t always get Hip Hop culture. What experiences really stand out for you when it comes to working with brands?

I really appreciate every brand I work with. The brands I work with are really the brands that I like. So it really means something more than just work. To point one out, I’d say Hublot Thailand. They always have cool and special events where fashion and music meet. And I think the Hublot team is very creative and different.

Recently you made a single with YENTED, who are a Pop R&B group. What are some other cross-genre collabs that you really loved doing?

Yeah, actually, I just heard their song on the radio and I loved it. They’re really new and coming up fast. And if you don’t know I really love Soul music, like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. These guys are always on my favorite playlists at home. I also really loved making the song called ‘Butterfly’ with Flower Far, and you will understand why when you hear it! And Flower Far is so amazing!

Who are you listening to the most right now?

Right now I would have to say Gunna. Even without his look, his music sounds so fun and entertaining. It’s not really lyrical rap, but his wordplay is very different and creative.

Rolling Loud Thailand is coming up soon. You performed there last year and it was dope. Are you doing it again?

Yes. I Can’t wait for it!

Tell us what 2025 is going to be like for TWOPEE SOUTHSIDE?

The new album is coming soon and it’s gonna have many different sounds and styles. Coming next year, so please stay tuned!
