Yuto Horigome comes back to win back to back gold medals

The smooth Japanese skater lives on the edge

Winning his first Olympic gold medal in 2021 was a breeze compared to this year for Yuto Horigome. Yuto barely qualified for the Japanese delegation of skaters this time around. In the Men’s Skateboard Street finals, he was behind all day until one trick changed it all. Once Yuto landed a nollie 270 backside noseblunt down the handrail, he scored a 97.08, the highest score of the day, and eventually repeated as the gold medal winner with a total score of 281.14.

In what has been called one of the best men’s finals ever because of the energy of the skaters and the crowd, Americans Jagger Eaton and Nyjah Huston still had the chance to top Yuto but failed to land their final tricks. Jagger got silver with 281.04, while Nyjah, considered the best street skater ever, collected a silver medal with 279.38.

The Men’s Skateboard Street finals was very different from when it happened in Japan in 2021, because at that time, crowds weren’t allowed in the venue due to COVID-19. Skaters had their teams cheering for them, but it was nothing like the rowdy fans in Paris on Monday.

On his win, Yuto said, “Nyjah and Jagger, they’re always at the top, and I was not really sure whether I could medal, and so I just did not want to have any regrets and I believed in that until the end.”
