Shockwaves have been sent through the Hip Hop, design, fashion, and art communities as the verified Instagram account of Virgil Abloh announced his death on November 28.

"We are devastated to announce the passing of our beloved Virgil Abloh, a fiercely devoted father, husband, son, brother, and friend. He is survived by his loving wife Shannon Abloh, his children Lowe Abloh and Grey Abloh, his sister Edwina Abloh, his parents Nee and Eunice Abloh, and numerous dear friends and colleagues," the post read.

Virgil is known as being the man who flipped fashion on its head in 2018 when he became the first black artistic director at Louis Vuitton. As a long-time collaborator with Kanye West, Virgil founded Off-White, a streetwear brand in 2012. But he didn’t just do men’s fashion as he branched out into furniture design in 2017 as well as vehicle design with Mercedes-Benz in 2020. He was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2018.

Virgil also had a high-profile music career. He deejayed at festivals like Circoloco and Tomorrowland, released music with Boys Noize, and Off-White collaborated with Pioneer on transparent CDJs.

Tributes started pouring in as soon as the somber news of his death spread over social media.
