Rapper UNIYAL recently dropped 'Namo Narayan,' a deeply personal track rooted in the landscapes, traditions, and struggles of his home state of Uttarakhand in India. Opening with a stark reference to this summer's deadly heat, the song reflects on life in the Himalayas while weaving together prayers for protection, environmental concerns, and everyday resilience.

UNIYAL invokes local deities as he raps about a changing world where demons have arrived disguised as humans and even the gods have grown sorrowful. His music draws inspiration from Jagar, an ancient Himalayan ritual used to invoke local deities through chants, storytelling, and instruments such as the hudka, thali, and dhol damau. Those sounds have been part of his life since childhood.

The themes of ‘Namo Narayan’ are direct and wide-ranging. UNIYAL addresses climate change, pollution, deforestation, unplanned development, faith, labour, resilience, and education while encouraging listeners to take responsibility for the future of their communities.

With ‘Namo Narayan,’ UNIYAL shows that Hip Hop can preserve regional traditions while speaking directly to the challenges facing the Himalayas today.
