Since the late-1990s and early-2000s, Japanese artist Takashi Murakami has been one of the most celebrated modern artists in the world. His Superflat theory and collabs with artists like Ye on album covers cemented him as a pop-cultural icon. A few years ago, he joined up with JP THE WAVY to become MNNK Bro., a supergroup that raps and travels to the outer reaches of your imagination. They have just released their fourth single, ‘SHUTOKO TOKYO,’ and it’s a trip between reality and an alternate universe.

Created by BRTHR, who knocked it into space with ‘LV MURAKAMI,’ the video team goes even further with ‘SHUTOKO TOKYO.’ Inside Murakami’s mind, the concept was to fuse Tokyo’s Metropolitan Expressway with the Japanese anime classic AKIRA. Murakami also wanted an extended 30-minute version, which took a few years to produce after the original was done two years ago.

WAVY goes hard on this one with rapid-fire rapping. He said, “This is our fourth song as MNNK Bro., but compared to the previous tracks, I feel like my own color comes through a little more strongly this time. I’m rapping fast over a beat with a real sense of speed.” As for Takashi Murakami, he said, “I hope this song, which captures the present moment of the 2020s, will live on into the future!”
