A China-Taiwan Hip Hop battle heats up
Wang Yitai has been denied entry into Taiwan for a concert
A lot of rappers enjoy the thrill of battling people from all over the world, but clashing with a whole country is different. According to the Mainland Affairs Council in Taiwan, Chengdu rapper Wang Yitai will be denied entry for a concert on September 14 because he wrote the term Taipei, China on promotional material.
Wang Yitai’s application to perform in Taiwan was rejected after his social media posts promoting his shows in “Taipei, China.” Usually, it’s China that bans Taiwanese artists who are friendly with the ruling government or thought of as promoting independence. The government in Taiwan regularly has Chinese artists perform because musical interactions are a positive way to cool down cross-straight tensions.
The Mainland Affairs Council stated, “Cross-strait exchanges should be conducted based on the principles of reciprocity and mutual respect, and any publications or promotions that belittle Taiwan’s status will not be tolerated."
