Megan Thee Stallion slithers up the charts with Yuki Chiba on ‘Mamushi’

The video draws hard from Japanese mythology

For years, LiFTED has predicted that a big-name Hip Hop artist will jump on a track by an Asian rapper and create fireworks in the Asian Hip Hop game. The prediction has come true, but the roles have been reversed.

Yuki Chiba has been having an amazing 2024. ‘Team Tomodachi’ has nearly 10 million views, and many of the other tracks that other MCs have made as a tribute to it, also have millions of views. Now, instead of the Japanese MC getting Megan Thee Stallion on a ‘Team Tomodachi’ remix, she got him on her track, ‘Mamushi.’ It’s an interesting role reversal that is genius for both teams.

Meg’s latest album, Megan, goes hard on the snake motif with songs like ‘Hiss’, ‘BOA’, ‘Rattle’, and ‘Mamushi,’ which is the name of a viper found in Japan. Meg and Yuki did the song together on the last show of her Hot Girl Summer Tour at the O2 Arena in London and put out the video for it.

Three days ago, Meg released the video for ‘Mamushi’ and it’s a stunner. Megan becomes a viper and then Yuki is left to fix all the problems made with a bit of Rush Hour in there for good measure. With typical Meg flair, the video and song are slithering up the charts and are at number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100. With the release of the video, ‘Mamushi’ is expected to go much higher.

Could this be the first time an Asian rapper hits the top 10 in the US? We’ll have to wait for more data to see, but the possibilities are endless.
