A pioneer who helped build Cambodia’s Rap scene from the ground up

While most people know the story of how Hip Hop was born in New York City, far fewer know how the culture took root in countries across Asia. In Cambodia, MC Lisha was part of that origin story. Widely recognized as the country’s first female rapper and often hailed as the Queen of Cambodian Hip Hop, Lisha passed away on February 5.

In 2002, Lisha helped introduce Hip Hop to Cambodia by spinning rap records on the radio alongside DJ Sope, often referred to as the Godfather of Cambodian Hip Hop. Not long after, she became a key presence in the Phnom Penh Bad Boyz crew, rocking stages at clubs and bars across the country. Instead of chasing clout or mainstream fame, Lisha focused on building a culture byintroducing Hip Hop to new ears and helping create a real scene from scratch.

By 2007, Lisha joined KlapYaHandz, a collective of Cambodian singers, rappers, and producers. Through her pen, she gave voice to experiences and perspectives that weren’t often heard in the male-dominated Rap space. Her lyrics spoke directly to women navigating Cambodia’s conservative society, offering empowerment and representation at a time when both were rare.

A true hustler in every sense–on the mic and in everyday life, even running her own Mexican food cart—Lisha embodied the DIY spirit of Hip Hop. She opened doors for women in Cambodian rap and left behind a legacy built on authenticity, generosity, and love for the culture.

Kay-Kay from Tiny Toones said, “Lisha is like a little sister to me. I talk shit to her. I made fun of her, but everything we do, it is just all from love. We are a family. She’s one of the realist, and the first Hip Hop queen in Cambodia. She was always a superstar that kept it real in the Hip Hop scene. She was always there for people that needed her in the Rap game. I’m going to miss my sister and always love her.”

Rest in power, MC Lisha. Your impact lives on.
