The Golden Melody Awards, held this past Saturday, June 29, in Taipei, Taiwan, are equivalent to the Grammys in the Mandarin-speaking Pop world. The ceremony has been held annually since 1990, and honors outstanding industry talent with songs in Mandarin, Taiwanese, Hakka, and Indigenous languages.

Usually, the nights are a big tribute to Mando-Pop and obscure Aboriginal music, but every few years, Hip Hop gets represented properly. In 2018, MJ116 won Best Group, and in 2021, Soft Lipa won two awards for Best Male Mandarin Singer and No. 1 Mandarin Album for Home Cookin.

This year’s ceremony had a big surprise as MC HotDog, the bad boy of Taiwanese Rap, won the Award for Best Male Mandarin Singer. He beat out award favorites Jude Chiu, Xu Jun, JJ Lin, and Marz23. When his name was announced as the winner, HotDog was as shocked as anyone else, saying, “What an eventful day. This is something that probably only happens once in a hundred years.”

Right before the award was handed out, HotDog performed but his mic muted halfway through the set. He begged the powers that be to start over, and he got a new mic and rocked it properly. Earlier in the night, HotDog also won an award for Best Lyricist for his album The Landlord Upstairs.
