Since 2018, Bangkok’s independent international music festival, Maho Rasop, has built a loyal following of attendees for booking local acts as well as left-of-center acts like Balming Tiger, AIR, and MILLI. On an Instagram post from July 7, Maho Rasop announced that they would no longer host the festival in its previous form. Instead, they will introduce the Maho Rasop Series, where each of the three co-founders will produce a headlining show in November and December.

Citing exorbitant artist fees and a saturation in the market for Indie festivals, Maho Rasop stated that it was unfeasible for them to continue with the full-scale festival format as before. Instead of just closing up shop, the Maho Rasop Series promises to carry on the same spirit as the festival, which was defined by the discovery of new music.

With the current global financial climate, a lot of people don’t understand how much time, effort, and money it takes to do an international-caliber festival. It’s a gamble every single year, and this year, Maho Rasop is doing the sensible thing and changing their direction.
