In 2023, Travis Scott released his latest 19-track album, Utopia, which went to number one on the Billboard 200 chart with nearly half a million streams in the first week alone. The hottest song on the album is his duet with Playboi Carti, ‘FE!N.’ On March 31 of this year, the video for ‘FE!N’ was released and saw Travis, Carti, and a host of other people going around and around in a circle like the lifestyle of feinds. The video has amassed more than 45 million views.
Two weeks ago, Lisa from BLACKPINK released ‘Rockstar,’ which straddles the line of K-pop and Hip Hop. Like everything BLACKPINK does, the video has gone viral and now has nearly 110 million views.
There is one scene in particular in ‘Rockstar’ that looks similar to one in ‘FE!N.’ At the 1.22 mark of ‘FE!N,’ there are a bunch of Asian kids with bob cuts that start to go around in a circle and all their faces begin to mesh together. In ‘Rockstar,’ at the 1.19 mark, a group of Asians wearing hoods are meshed together using the same editing technique.
The director of ‘FE!N,’ Gabriel Moses, called out Lisa’s team on Instagram after a fan pointed out the similarities between the two shots. On his Instagram Story, Gabriel said that he had “Mad love for his snitches” and posted the email. Then he also posted the shots of both videos side by side.
Is this just art imitating life or is it a case of plagiarism by Lisa’s team? Gabriel has thrown the gauntlet down and given Lisa’s team till the end of the month to reply.
