Korean MC Jerry.K loses battle with brain cancer at the age of 42
The influential Indie rapper left a legacy of activism & lyricism
A pioneer in the Korean underground Hip Hop world, Jerry.K has passed away at the age of 42. Bornborn Kim Jin-il, Jerry.K announced in 2024 that he was fighting glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.
Jerry.K first emerged in the early-2000s as part of the duo Loquence with Makesense, helping lay the foundation for Korea’s independent Hip Hop movement. He was also a key member of the influential collective Soul Company before establishing himself as a solo artist known for sharp, socially conscious lyricism.
His 2008 solo album The Erlking helped define his voice that confronted society’s issues head-on. Over the years, he built a reputation for tackling themes such as inequality, labor rights, and political accountability, earning respect as one of the genre’s most principled voices.
His label, Daze Alive Music, founded in 2011, was a place that became instrumental in supporting independent artists and pushing forward Korea’s alternative Hip Hop scene. In 2024, Jerry.K publicly shared that he had undergone surgery and was beginning treatment for cancer.
News of his passing has since prompted an outpouring of tributes from artists and fans, many highlighting his fearless commitment to truth in music. Jerry.K leaves behind a legacy defined not by commercial success, but by conviction as an artist who used Hip Hop as a platform to challenge, question, and speak truth to power without compromise.
