The year of ‘Tomodachi’ peaks with Will Smith jumping on the remix

Yuki Chiba’s comeback gets a verse for Will Smith’s comeback

There’s no doubt that Yuki Chiba’s ‘Team Tomodachi’ is the Asian Hip Hop song of the year for 2024. The beat is triple fire emojis, the verses are tight, and it’s inspired a whole region to get behind it and record their own verses over it.

Over this past weekend, Will Smith, currently still in rehab mode from the slap heard around the world, dropped his remix of ‘Team Tomodachi’ on Instagram from the back seat of a car.

Will hasn’t always gotten the lyrical love from his peers over the years. A lot of that was due to his nice-guy image and superstar status. With the Chris Rock fiasco, Will doesn’t need to be fake-nice anymore. On the verse, he discusses why he’s on all the posters, his Philly roots, how he can 911 a Porsche, and that red carpets light up when he’s walking them. It’s pretty much as Will Smith as Will Smith gets.

The bigger picture here is that an American Hip Hop legend has jumped on an Asian Hip Hop track not because they’ve been paid by the artist, but because the song is fire. 2024 is the year of ‘Tomodachi’ for sure, but it’s also the year that Asian Hip Hop is starting to rise to the top.
