In one of Outkast’s best songs, ‘Rosa Parks,’ there’s a harmonica solo toward the end that really changes it from a typical Rap jam to an all-out foot stomper. If DJs were playing ‘Rosa Parks’ at the time and they cut off the song before the harmonica break, it was customary to boo them so they knew next time to keep it in.
Around that same time, D12’s ‘Purple Pills’ came out and there was a harmonica part at the end. It seemed, for a slight time, that the harmonica and Hip Hop were fitting together like peanut butter and jelly. Sadly, the harmonica hasn’t been heard from much since the early 2000s.
Now, JB and CY Leo are bringing the instrument back.
JB recently dropped a gem, a live four-song set with COLLAB HK recorded at Solebrew Cafe & Lounge. Hong Kong’s most notorious MC was in the groove, especially on the first song, ‘得個等’ featuring CY Leo on the harmonica. CY’s harmonica gives the introduction a Bluesy feel to go along with the neon colors of the shop.
JB continues with ‘潮共,’ a brand-new song, ‘Alone,’ and ends the set with ‘Different.’ It’s a chill set, but it easily puts people in the mood for partying. COLLAB HK shows a lot of potential here and with so many artists in Hong Kong, it’ll be interesting to see what they do next.
