DJ LYAN & Baby Jean bring bull surfing to the forefront on ‘Tapori’
The raw energy of the sport matches the hard breaks in the song
As soon as Hanumankind broke the internet with ‘Big Dawgs’ and the video with the stuntpeople performing on the well of death, the search was on for the next crazy Old School tradition out of India. Bull surfing is here and featured prominently in DJ LYAN and Baby Jean’s track ‘Tapori.’
In the post-harvest season in Kerala, India, bull surfing happens in a muddy, ankle-deep paddy field. Two bulls are yoked together as they charge around the paddy. A surfer, riding a wooden plank behind the bulls, holds on to their tails or a small harness. The surfer has assistants who try to guide the bulls around the paddy in the quickest time possible.
In ‘Tapori,’ DJ LYAN and Baby Jean don’t get muddy, but their camera crews get amazing slow-motion shots of the bull surfing from the fields as well as their drones. The song, released with DESI TRILL, highlights Baby Jean’s lyrical dexterity and DJ LYAN’s deep Festival Trap sounds.
The song and video for ‘Tapori’ show another part of Indian culture that makes the continent so fascinating.
