Sky’s the Limit for The Notorious B.I.G. statue in Brooklyn

This one goes out to you…and you…and you

Like a producer who hears an old song and wants to flip it, artist Sherwin Banfield wanted to make a tribute to his favorite rapper, but do it in a modern way. He told Artnet News that he “wanted to take something classic then remix or sample it with something new and fresh.”

The result is a sustainable sonic statue dedicated to the forever King of New York, the Notorious B.I.G. Dubbed Sky’s the Limit in the County of Kings, a nine-foot stainless steel statue of a crowned Biggie in a suit of armor with a solar panel on the back plays an endless loop of Bad Boy hits mixed by Mister Cee. Standing at the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge, Sherwin wanted people to feel B.I.G.’s presence as well as hear his words. “The location had a profound impact on the work,” Banfield said. “It’s on a hill, and I wanted viewers to ascend towards a regal monument and be welcomed with open arms and two essential human qualities - the voice through a microphone and love via a heart.”

The statue was made possible by the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership and the Dumbo Improvement District in an open call for artwork. Bill Makky, the same person who cast the Wall Street Bull, made this oversized Biggie. The statue will be showing until the spring of 2023.
