ATARASHII GAKKO! revamps the Beastie Boys’ classic ‘Intergalactic’

2021 is 1998 all over again

The Beastie Boys are legends in the Hip Hop universe. In 1998, their first single from the album Hello Nasty was ‘Intergalactic,’ an Electro-Rap jam that was for the poppers and the lockers. In the video, the three MCs wandered Shinjuku, Japan wearing street cleaners’ outfits and doing a bit of dancing and posing on the corners. It was wild. It was weird. It was perfectly Beastie.

Fast forward 23 years and the streets of Shinjuku are under attack once again. Instead of the Beastie Boys, we’ve got 88rising’s ATARASHII GAKKO! revamping ‘Intergalactic,’ and redoing the video as well. The new version takes the beat and gives it a bit of a refurbishment, while the four MCs of ATARASHII GAKKO! remake the lyrics into a phonetic interpretation instead of a straight cover. It’s experimental while being referential and very now. At only a minute and 20 seconds, it’s perfectly ATARASHII GAKKO!

A few months ago, the keyboardist for the Beastie Boys, Money Mark, gave ATARASHII GAKKO! a shout out on Twitter calling them his new favorite band. I’m sure he loves this!
