The Weeknd cleans up at the Billboard Music Awards

It’s sweet revenge after being shut out by the Grammys

The Weeknd has had one of the best runs in pop music history recently and was handsomely rewarded for that by winning 10 Billboard Music Awards on May 23. After getting blanked at the Grammys for his massive 2020 hit album After Hours and subsequently calling out the awards as being ‘corrupted,’ The Weeknd more than made up for it by cleaning up at the BMAs.

In addition to being named Top Artist, the Canadian star also took home Top Male Artist and Top R&B Song as part of his impressive haul. After vowing to never submit his music to the Grammys again, The Weeknd got his sweet revenge.

Winning 10 out of 16 nominations on the night, The Weeknd has once again proved he is a Star Boy. He also delivered a stirring performance of ‘Save Your Tears’, in a black suit accompanied by 20 matching vintage cars driven by stunt drivers - pulling off a uniquely spectacular performance.

Directed by Alex Lill and Charlie Morse, the car formation took two eight-hour days of rehearsal prior to the performance. “There was a lot of trust with those cars going by,” said Morse. However, The Weeknd kept his cool and delivered a much-talked-about performance.

In other notable Hip Hop news, Drake was named Artist of the Decade and was introduced with a two-minute video with a voiceover by Lebron James. He accepted his award with his son, Adonis, in tow.
