Epik High’s Tablo & BTS’ RM focus on mental health issues on ‘Stop the Rain’

Hip Hop can help

LiFTED | Marcus Aurelius | 7 May 2025

A lot of people think that Hip Hop is only parties, drinking, drugs, and flashing cash. There is another side to this 51-year-old art form, which is helping people who are in the same situations through music, and that’s what ‘Stop the Rain,’ a track by Epik High’s Tablo and BTS’ RM does.

The serious song takes on mental health issues faced by both MCs. It was recorded in 2022, before RM went to serve his mandatory military service, but it was only released on May 2. Tablo has gone through a lot on his way to superstardom, including people questioning his version of his life and threatening his family’s safety. He starts by talking about being raised in a religious household, how he was told he was gifted but also raised by the rod, and how that led him to hate the adults in the room.

RM also gets deeply personal about how he thought he was destined to end up in the 27 Club, a group of musicians who died at this age, including Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and others.

The video is understated as an anime kid is just falling and falling and falling. One of the most important takeaways from ‘Stop the Rain’ is that there is no happy ending. For people who have a history of depression, it’s not as easy as many people believe to just be happy. Instead, they have to feel their feelings. Tablo and RM have turned something painful into beauty, and it will help a lot of people who feel the same.
