A lot of Hip Hop is on the superficial tip. There are flashy cars, but those are rented by the record company. There are mansions with pools, but those can be used for a one-day photo shoot. There is an abundance of scantily-clad ladies who look like they love the rapper, but they are models for hire from their agency. The lyrics talk about money, guns, and how the opps are everywhere out to get them.
Then there is reality Rap.
Thai rapper SPRITE recently dropped the ‘ทน [Life Session]’ and it’s about as real as real gets. He starts the song on the chorus with the amazing line, “I don't have Louis Vuitton, I have only big debts.” From there, SPRITE is really in the melodic pocket discussing things that trouble him like being unable to afford a name-brand bag for his girl, his inability to sleep because he’s so worried about money, and how he contemplates throwing himself into the sea. In the end, he wonders if the woman he loves will endure the hardships with him. The song has a high replay value because SPRITE is spitting uncomfortable truths.
The video, shot on an iPhone, keeps with the somber tone. He starts rapping from a barber’s chair surrounded by hair on the ground. Soon, he’s in the same spot but leading what looks to be a group therapy session. The video for ‘ทน [Life Session]’ is stripped down to the basics, but SPRITE and his pained vocal inflections make it fit perfectly with the song.
‘ทน [Life Session]’ is put out by HYPE TRAIN, who had been a bit quiet after releasing new songs every two weeks for quite a long time. LiFTED is extremely happy that HYPE TRAIN season is here again.
