Malaysia gives middle finger to Epik High fans
The use of the band’s lightsticks could lead to trouble
Epik High has always played by its own rules. For many K-pop concerts, fans clap and wave lightsticks of any color high in the sky to show their enjoyment of the music. But Epik High has always been the anti-K-pop K-pop band so on their website, they sell Park Kyu Bong, which is their version of a lightstick that they want people to wave at their shows. The amazing thing about Park Kyu Bong is also it’s biggest fault - it’s a big middle finger.
Over the weekend, the band was on the road for the Malaysian leg of it’s Epik High The Pump Tour 2024. In anticipation of the show, many fans bought the Park Kyu Bong to take to the show with them and put their lightstick fingers in the air. Unfortunately, under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 of Malaysian Law, the middle finger gesture is considered offensive and could lead to charges. Fans were banned from photographing or recording with the middle finger and taking it to the show. The video that announced the ban went viral with nearly 350,000 views.
Surprisingly, most Epik High fans agreed with the ban, since it could land them in trouble. The biggest problem they had was that the organizers announced it too late after they had already purchased their Park Kyu Bongs.
The Park Kyu Bongs can be purchased at the Epik High website here.
