It’s great when artists try something different and it works like it didn’t the first time. In modern parlance, we call it rebranding, but Hulk Hogan used to be Sterling Golden and 2 Chainz used to be Tity Boi. Brooklyn rapper Khantrast used to be in a TRIKUZA, with Kazuo, rapping about anime. Now, he’s one of the hottest Asian rappers on the scene, and he recently delivered another full-course take-out meal, ‘East Side Bop.’
Khantrast is the delivery person but he can stunt on his modified moped. He goes to pick up some food and then the Yung Sun restaurant becomes a block party because of his ‘East Side Bop.’ The crew gets behind the wok and learns how to cook up some food, and they even get to play some mahjong.
Khantrast has been accused of making a mockery of Asians with his videos, but his ‘Landed in Brooklyn’ video has more than five million views so the case is closed. As a rapper, Khantrast has some slick nastiness about him with lines like, “She gonna eat me up like I’m beef fried rice,” or “I’m trying to give her spinal realignment.” It feels like Khantrast has taken this second chance he’s been given as a rapper and is doing all he can with it. If he keeps coming out with ‘East Side Bops,’ there’s no telling how big he can get.
