K.K Flow & M.O.J.I. get their walk on in ‘靴擦れ‘

Boom Bap Jazz fusion is on its way back

Jazz and Hip Hop have gone together since the glory days of the Golden Era when Gang Starr and Tribe Called Quest sampled soft saxes and laid-back drum grooves to make classic hits that people still know the words of today. Japanese producer 90beats [also known as DJ TAKAKI] gives a 2024-version of Boom Bap Jazz fusion to K.K Flow & M.O.J.I. in the form of ‘靴擦れ,‘ roughly translated to blisters, sore feet, or get your walk on, depending on where you look.

As soon as 90beats’ horns hit, things feel as fresh as the 1990s in the best possible way. It’s always good to start a video in a record shop, then light a joint before rapping. K.K Flow is up first and he strolls through the city at night doing his thing and showing why his initials stand for King Kong. He soon meets up with M.O.J.I. and they get their walk on through the streets of Shizuoka while the camera switches from color to black and white. Another thing ‘靴擦れ‘ gets right is how they do the stylish subtitles for the words.

K.K Flow and M.O.J.I. have been doing it up right lately and ‘靴擦れ‘ is the lead single from their EP, The Bootleg Tape 4.2. If they keep rhyming on the Jazz and Boom Bap, their future sounds golden.
