J. Cole is taking his basketball talents to China for the Nanjing Tongxi Monkey Kings
The Rap superstar returns to pro basketball for a third run
J. Cole just dropped The Fall Off, a double album split between his 29-year-old and 39-year-old mindsets, and promoted it in the most Cole way possible by driving his old Honda Civic from city to city, selling CDs out of the trunk. At one point, the car even broke down mid-run, leading to a gritty, on-the-spot visual for ‘Old Dog’ at a repair shop.
Now, in news that sounds like an April Fool’s joke but isn’t, Cole has signed with the Chinese Basketball Association’s Nanjing Tongxi Monkey Kings. This marks his third stint in professional basketball. He previously suited up for the Rwanda Patriots in the Basketball Africa League in 2021 and the Scarborough Shooting Stars in Canada’s CEBL in 2022.
Statistically, Cole hasn’t lit up the scoreboard, averaging under five points per game, but the move is bigger than box scores. It’s a cultural moment, blending Hip Hop and hoops in a way only he can.
With a massive 73-date tour kicking off July 11 in North Carolina, it’s unclear how long this run will last. But whether it’s for a handful of games or just headlines, Cole continues to live out a dual dream most rappers only rap about.
