Haysen Cheng lives and breathes Hip Hop. He even went as far as moving from his home of Hong Kong to Chengdu, China to chase his dream. Now, that Hip Hop dream is coming to fruition with his first single, ‘黑捌’ [Black Eight] from his album Hong Kong Don, releasing on March 18.
The beat, produced by HARIKIRI, has speckles of Chinese instruments in it. Haysen is up first and he goes off. He not only drops English and Mandarin but also adds some Spanish in there for good effect. On the hook, Vinida’s light voice is a nice contrast to Haysen’s gravely baritone. But Vinida is not just here for the chorus. She rocks it smoothly on verse two and shows why she’s one of China’s biggest talents in the Hip Hop world. Haysen slides in for verse three where he is out to prove that he is this generation’s lyrical Ip Man. The video matches the mood and tone perfectly by being shot in an industrial area on a roof on a chilly day and in a deserted parking garage below.
It’s time for the Asian Hip Hop world to get to know Haysen Cheng a bit more and at LiFTED, we are looking forward to the Hong Kong Don.
