Gloc-9 & A$tro reflect through late-night conversations on ‘Tagay’
Beneath the Pop-Rap surface, Gloc-9 & A$tro unpack the pain behind their friendship
Gloc-9 returns with ‘Tagay’, a song that feels like an intimate performance at the dinner table after a long night. Featuring fellow Filipino rapper A$tro, the track channels the kind of conversations that occur when the drinks are heavy and defenses are lowered.
On the surface, ‘Tagay’ moves with a light touch. Bright guitar lines and upbeat drums give it the shape of a Pop-Rap song that’s reminiscent of 2010s B.o.B and Travie McCoy. Beneath that accessible sound sits something heavier. Gloc-9 uses the contrast well, letting the cheerful production carry stories that deal with loyalty, loss, and the quiet pain people hide behind laughter.
The lyrics trace friendships built through years of mischief, arguments, and late nights. Gloc-9 recalls friends who were always present–sometimes loud, sometimes broken, but never absent–when it mattered. He paints scenes of endless drinking sessions and advice given while everyone fights their own battles. One of the song’s most striking turns comes when that familiar friend disappears, revealing a burden no one noticed until it was too late. The repeated invitation, “Kaibigan tara tagay”, shifts from celebration to remembrance.
‘Tagay’ succeeds because it understands that friendship often lives in small rituals. It’s a song about raising a glass to share in each other’s struggles.
