CHUN WEN, JONIN & POKMINDSET go low & slow on ‘พวกกูแปลก’

Thai lowrider Funk in full effect

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Black and Latino youth started switching out their cars’ suspensions to drop them low to the ground and drive around really slow. Now, lowriders have hydraulic suspensions that bounce up and down on their tires with white stripes and spoke wheel rims. Lowrider culture has now expanded from the slums of southern California to everywhere in the world.

In Thai rapper CHUN WEN’s latest video, he and his crew including POKMINDSET and JONIN, are riding low and slow in ‘พวกกูแปลก,’ which translates to “We’re weird.” All three rappers take on the Chicano look with bandanas tied on backward a la 2Pac, wife beaters, and braids for days. They are all flexing in front of some amazing lowriders and even busting off some West Coast dance moves.

What stands out most about ‘พวกกูแปลก’ is the dirty, nasty lowrider funk of the song produced by ZOL. The entire point of the filthy bassline here is to rattle the trunks of the lowriders they love so much.
