March is Hong Kong’s time of the year with the hipsters out for ComplexCon HK, the artists in town for Art Basel, and even the sports fans out for the Rugby Sevens. This past weekend at Art Basel Hong Kong, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Sabado por la Noche aka Saturday Night stole all the headlines as it sold for US$14.5 million, making it likely to be the highest price of the season.

The painting was made in 1984, which features multiple layers, two griot characters, and two naked women. It’s a dark red painting and showcases his time hanging out and living with Andy Warhol.

Saturday Night was last sold for US$10.8 million in 2019 by Christie’s, who is now cultivating the Asian market for Basquiat, one of the most in-demand artists in the world.
