Awich, Joey Bada$$ & RZA tell the youth nothing but the truth on ‘Fear Us’

“How we gonna fight a war for a country that brings us hell?”

Hip Hop at its core has always been protest music. From The Message by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five to the revolutionary catalog of Public Enemy, Rap has long been a way to get hard truths to the youth. On Awich’s latest single, Fear Us, featuring Joey Bada$$ and RZA, the message is clear: the next generation deserves better.

As one of the standout tracks on her RZA-produced Okinawan Woman album, Awich steps to the mic first and shows the guys a thing or two. A lot of MCs might be nervous on a track with two greats, but the pride of Japan does her thing. She’s got an important theme, and she sticks to it with integrity. Joey Bada$$ is a lyricist through and through, and on ‘Fear Us,’ he sounds incredible rhyming from the bottom of his heart. RZA’s dusty beat on ‘Fear Us’ sounds like a walk to a bodega in the old New York City, and he is always dropping gems from his deep fountain of knowledge when he rhymes.

The video for ‘Fear Us’ is stellar as well. The focus is on the generations to come, but the MCs all look sharp rapping in front of sound systems or a corner area on the top of a skyscraper. Awich has been on an incredible run over the past few years, and with every release, she continues to raise the bar for herself and for Asian Hip Hop as a whole.
