Ai Weiwei speaks truth to power with his new circular print
The finger sometimes says a lot more than the mouth
Since 1995, Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has let his finger speak his truth to power. In his work, Study of Perspective, Ai took 16 years of pictures of his middle finger in front of iconic bastions of power like the White House, the Eiffel Tower, and Tiananmen Square. It wouldn’t be hyperbole to say that Ai has the most famous middle finger in the world.
Now, a medley of Ai’s fingers has been immortalized in a circular print by Avante Arte. Called Circle in Blue, Ai’s bird radiates outwards in a continuous composition that is available for purchase. The finish of the print is a sly nod to Ai’s porcelain sculptures, which were inspired by Ming and Yuan dynasties.
There are only going to be 100 copies of this 11-layer print up for sale. People who want to buy the art are put in a drawing and then selected at random.
