Japanese Hip Hop icon Awich is always pushing the boundaries while straddling Japanese and global superstardom. Case in point is ‘Wax On Wax Off,’ the RZA-produced track released five months ago. In it, Awich goes toe-to-toe with FERG and Lupe Fiasco on the song, and the video is a beautiful, action-packed ode to Japan. With nearly 8.5 million views on YouTube, the song has been a smashing success.

The thing about Awich is that she doesn’t forget her people. Instead of trying to rush out and get Doja Cat or Bruno Mars on a remix, she makes a U-turn back to Japan and gets some of the best MCs in the country on the ‘Wax On Wax Off’ Japan remix with R-Shitei of Creepy Nuts, NENE, 鎮座DOPENESS, and C.O.S.A.

It’s hard to be as dope as the ‘Wax On Wax Off’ original video, but the Japan remix is up there as it feels like an homage to Japanese cinematography with a bit of Akira Kurosawa’s rhythmic storytelling in there. First up is the queen herself, Awich, in a room with two shibari goddesses hanging, pole dancers, and baddies doing bad things. R-Shitei is up second and his flow is tight and the visuals are stunning as he’s rapping in front of a massive tree while nearly a dozen warriors fight in and out of the frame. Nene comes up in the middle and black grills and a gold-painted body in some scenes. 鎮座DOPENESS part in the song takes him on a journey, while it’s easy to see C.O.S.A.’s sumo heritage in his part.

One of the best things about the video is waiting till the credits are over and seeing RZA and Awich drop hints about her new single coming out soon, just like they would do in old kung fu flicks.

Check out Awich, R-Shitei, NENE, 鎮座DOPENESS and C.O.S.A. on ‘Wax On Wax Off’ Japan remix.
