Just when we thought we knew everything about Indonesian Hip Hop, there are still crazy hidden gems waiting to be discovered. For instance, Javanese rapper Pretty Rico’s latest single ‘Sampurasan’ is a cultural combination of Javanese and Sundanese culture - and it’s dope.

Featuring his label mate Qorygore [QG], ‘Sampurasun’ is an energetic, bass-heavy Trap joint that highlights the sounds of Javanese and Sundanese music - specifically a hypnotic flute loop that gets inside your head and stays there. It’s all beautifully fused together by DJ Slide of the popular Rap-Metal band 7 Dwarfs. Leading with the crispy flute line, Pretty Rico and Qorygore trade tight verses while flipping between English and Bahasa. The highlight however, goes to the Sundanese nuances and Javanese gamelan in the beat, which sit well with the hefty bassline and booming kicks. With these folk elements incorporated in the track, ‘Sampurasan’ is an addictive track that further expands the native sound of Indo-Rap. Lyrics-wise, the track is culturally attuned, with the term ‘Sampurasan’ used by Sundanese in their daily conversations.

‘Sampurasun’ is the first release from Pretty Rico’s upcoming album, which is slated for an October 2021 release. A deluxe version of the album will follow up later with 20 tracks in November 2021.

This is the first time Pretty Rico is collaborating with his labelmate Qorygore. The YouTuber-turned-rapper released his debut album PIL [Power, Intelligence, and Love] in May 2021, and has already amassed over 1 million streams across all digital platforms in 5 months.
