What do Nicki Minaj and Lauryn Hill have in common? Besides both being lyrical assassins, they are the two female solo rappers to debut at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The problem is that they did it 34 years apart.

This week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart sees Nicki Minaj’s new single, ‘Super Freaky Girl’ debut at number one. The last female solo rapper to do that was Lauryn Hill in 1988 with ‘Doo Wop [That Thing].’

In an Instagram note to her fans, Nicki said, “You did it Barbz” referring to her fanbase, “I love you so much. Like so so SO much. Thank you.” With 21 million streams and 89,000 digital downloads, Nicki also debuted at number one in Digital Song Sales, which was also the highest of the year.

‘Super Freaky Girl’ samples heavily from Rick James’ classic ‘Super Freak’ which had already been sampled by MC Hammer’s ‘U Can’t Touch This.’ She’s also tapped to host the MTV Video Music Awards this Sunday as well as receive the 2022 Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the show.
