India hits festival rough patch as Circoloco Mumbai canceled hours before start

Fresh restrictions followed overdose deaths one week earlier

India’s live events industry has hit a rough patch. Last week, Italian techno duo 999999999, also known as 9x9, performed at Mumbai’s NESCO Exhibition Centre in Goregaon East. During the night, yellow pills believed to be MDMA were reportedly circulated among a group of MBA students, several of whom soon suffered cramps, dizziness, and severe discomfort. Two women were hospitalized for overdoses. By Sunday morning, one man had died, along with one of the women. Authorities later arrested multiple individuals allegedly connected to the drugs.

Just seven days later, Circoloco Mumbai was set to make its India debut on April 19 with a heavyweight lineup featuring Mau P, Chris Stussy, Marco Carola, and Michael Bibi. But only hours before doors opened, organizers announced the show had been canceled after newly tightened regulatory protocols prevented final permissions from being granted.

The fallout could stretch beyond one event. With Rolling Loud India 2026 and an upcoming Ye concert on the horizon, promoters across India may now face heightened scrutiny. Unless safety systems, compliance measures, and crowd protections improve quickly, last-minute cancellations could become a growing trend instead of a rare exception.

The Circoloco Mumbai cancelation notice is below.
