Josh Cullen & Al James celebrate Filipino talent with ‘Yoko Na’
The single marks a huge collab between the Filipino Pop & Rap scene
Every July, the Philippines celebrates Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino, a week-long event in July dedicated to promoting and celebrating homegrown Filipino music. This year SB19’s Josh Cullen brings in the masterful MC Al James on the single ‘Yoko Na.’
‘Yoko Na’ tells the story of a love that’s slowly unraveling, where words that need to be said remain unspoken. The lyrics explore the pain and frustration of a relationship slipping away, capturing the emotional turmoil of two people struggling to hold on. According to the track's producer, Brian Lotho, ‘Yoko Na’ is inspired by "real-life messy situations" and serves as a "raw honest take from the heart" on navigating jaded love.
The collaboration brings together two of the Philippines' most prominent music figures, each known for their distinct styles. Josh Cullen, a member of the P-pop group SB19, showcases his versatility by stepping into the R&B genre, while Al James, a heavyweight in the Filipino Rap scene, adds his signature smooth flow to the mix.
The music video for ‘Yoko Na’ is set against the backdrop of Manila's iconic Metropolitan Theatre, a venue that adds a layer of gravitas to the already intense track. Both artists appear in monochromatic black outfits, a visual choice that complements the song's somber tone. The video's cinematic scenes enhance the narrative, with Cullen and James performing their verses amidst a story of love and loss.
