Korea is going all-in on breakdancing in 2023. Not only do they have some of the best breaking crews in the world, but now they are going to start teaching them very young. Recently, The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education [SMOE] and the Korea Breaking Federation [KBF] signed an agreement to create breakdancing classes for students.

The KBF is the administrative body of dance events and competitions in South Korea, and they are now tasked with organizing classes and coming up with teaching materials and teachers for classes. This is the first time that the SMOE has put break dancing into the public education system. SMOE Superintendent Cho Hee-Yeon recently said, “We hope that breakdancing can contribute to the health of Seoul citizens, and provide an opportunity for South Korea to excel in the upcoming Asian Games and the Olympics.”

What he was referring to is the global explosion of breakdancing’s popularity once it was announced that it would be part of the 2024 Olympics. In 2023, breakdancing will be a sport at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, and a big testing ground for all Asian countries and their dancers.
