In August, Ying Ying, the oldest female panda first-time mother, gave birth to twin panda babies at Hong Kong’s Ocean Park. This was the first pair of locally-born pandas since the former British colony returned to China’s rule in 1997.
Starting this week, thousands of panda sculptures will invade four different parts of Hong Kong as the AllRightsReserved hypes the animals up before the newborns meet the public in February. On Monday, December 1, 2,500 panda sculptures were put up under the wing of a plane at the Hong Kong airport. These pandas will be displayed in four different parts of town starting on Saturday, December 7, as part of the PANDA GO! FEST HK. The pandas will be on the Avenue of Stars December 7 and 8, Ngong Ping 360 December 14 and 15, Ocean Park December 21 and 22, and Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park December 25 and 25.
A charity auction will also be held for 11 special-edition pandas designed by stars like Pharrell Williams, Huang Bo, Du Juan, and others. Each of these pandas will be auctioned online for charity, and proceeds will go to Ocean Park to support the panda conservation efforts.
Pandas are China’s unofficial mascot, so Hong Kong is using them as soft power to pull in tourists and boost it’s economy for the foreseeable future.
