In 1988, before he became the Japanese streetwear Hall of Famer NIGO, Tomoaki Nagao was a teenager who loved Nikes. It was then that he saw the beauty in the Air Force 3s, but also realized the difficulty of getting them in Japan. By 1993, NIGO founded A Bathing Ape, which was a facsimile of what Nike was doing down to the toebox and midsole.
Thirty-plus years later and after numerous lawsuits and unpleasant letters, NIGO and Nike are collaborating on the Air Force 3, one of NIGOs favorite shoes that has influenced his decades in the music, design, and pop culture game. NIGO said, “Nike truly has many masterpieces. The AF3 is a hidden masterpiece that I remember loving at the time. Through my first collaboration with Nike, I want to reintroduce everyone to its magnificence.”
Built on a white canvas, the pink, yellow, red, green, and blue Air Force Low 3 Blue Void sneaker is truly beautiful. The Multi-Color is also nice, and the Light British Tan offers an incredible Fossil colorway for the fall. The custom boxes lean heavily on anime and point to future collabs. Of course, there are varsity jackets and hoodies to sport along with patches and pins.
Since NIGO is a curator of the highest level, his Nike debut must match those standards. Just from the commercial for the collab, it’s easy to see that the Air Force 3s are the beginning of a fruitful relationship.
