Metro Boomin goes full superhero mode for Heroes & Villains
Morgan Freeman, Lakeith Standfield, Young Thug & Gunna are also featured
“If young Metro don’t trust you, I’m gon’ shoot you,” says Future in that syrupy drawl that can only be his. Can you name me a more iconic and recognizable producer tag that comes close to rivaling Metro Boomin’s? No chance.
The American producer has made some of Hip Hop’s absolute flyest songs consistently over the past decade. Think ‘Bad and Boujee’ from Migos [RIP Takeoff], Drake and Future’s ‘Jumpman’, and 21 Savage’s ‘No Heart.’ All of these jams have that Metro Boomin Midas touch.
Now, four years in the making, Metro Boomin is putting out a brand new album, Heroes & Villains. This is the follow-up to 2018’s NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES. In this age of streaming and surprise album drops [Drake, we see you], not many artists do teasers to build up hype and anticipation anymore. Gone are the days where you’d countdown the seconds till an album or song is released, frothing at all the promotional teasers your favorite artists drop. It’s almost as if artists have taken it for granted, knowing that their listeners would jump on anything they put out regardless. That might ring true…unless you’re Metro Boomin.
On November 30, he dropped the trailer for Heroes & Villains via a short film on YouTube. It features the likes of Morgan Freeman, Lakeith Standfield, Young Thug, Gunna, and himself. Directed by Gibson Hazard, the short film follows Metro Boomin as the city’s hero who has mysteriously disappeared, allowing a villain, played by Standfield to wreak havoc on the city.
If you’re a big superhero film buff, you’d see easter eggs of similarly shot frames from iconic movies such as The Dark Knight where Heath Ledger playing the Joker has his head out the window while driving a police car. Standfield does the same here, except he’s in a fire truck. Young Thug and Gunna also make hilarious cameos as news anchormen. Freeman, who narrates the short film, also appears towards the middle of it, giving Metro Boomin a pep talk.
“And you know what they say if young Metro don’t trust you, mother****** you better run,” Freeman says in the voice over, as Metro Boomin heroically rides out in a Batmobile-esque whip. Chills.
Heroes & Villains will arrive on all streaming platforms on December 2, and features some of the biggest names in the game; John Legend, Chris Brown, Future, 21 Savage, Young Nudy, Travis Scott, Young Thug, Mustafa, and A$AP ROCKY.
