James An & moon blur reality & illusion on ‘We Can Smile’

Does perception matter more than reality?

Everyone knows social media messes with their heads, yet billions still spend hours staring into their own personal black mirrors. Independent Hip Hop artist James An leans into that contradiction on his latest single, ‘We Can Smile,’ linking up with moon to unpack the illusion of picture-perfect happiness.

A veteran of Hip Hop reality TV, James An made his mark on Show Me the Money 10 and finished runner-up on RAP:PUBLIC. Beyond the mic, he’s also engaged in academic research on Korean Hip Hop, exploring how storytelling can be used in classrooms to reduce racism and build cultural understanding.

That duality of real life versus performance runs through ‘We Can Smile.’ The track floats between Hip Hop and R&B, with James delivering slow, syrupy verses while moon adds a sultry, understated counterbalance. Together, they blur the line between authenticity and presentation, mirroring the curated lives we scroll through every day.

In the end, the message is simple but pointed. No matter what’s really going on, sometimes all that’s left for the feed is a smile.
