GODZILLA THE ART opens today in Japan
15 artists from around the world pay tribute to the monster
The Parco Museum Tokyo is holding GODZILLA THE ART exhibition starting today and going until December 16. Fifteen artists from around the globe are showcasing their takes on Japan’s most famous monster.
Over the years, 38 Godzilla films have been made. Thirty of them have been made in Japan, three of them have been animated, and five have been made by Hollywood. Over that time, Godzilla has come in many shapes and forms, and artists have been inspired by them differently.
In GODZILLA THE ART, artists Roby Dwi Antono, Hiroki Tsukuda, Ryuichi Ohira, James Jarvis, Tadanobu Asano, and more were invited to pay tribute to the creature from the sea. This project marks the 70th anniversary of Godzilla’s creation.
Tetsuya Nakamura, who created the key visual for this exhibition, had this to say about his work, "I paid tribute to those who had created Godzilla before me, and I went through a careful process of trial and error. I focused on the beauty of the form of the ferocious yet cool 1964 Godzilla as my motif, and amplified my own image of Godzilla."
