Almost exactly a year ago, Indo-Fijian rapper Fijiana broke through with ‘Welcome to the Bay,’ a love letter to the Bay Area that put her Richmond roots front and center. Now she’s linking with another artist who knows a thing or two about moving between cultures.

Nigeria-born Yung Sammy moved to India when he was 12 and has built his reputation as one of Desi Hip Hop’s most multilingual MCs, rapping across English, Hindi, Punjabi, Haryanvi, and Gujjari. On ‘LIKE THAT,’ the two multicultural rappers meet in the middle for a breezy new single released through Indian music giant T-Series.

With sitar played by Fateh Ali Khan running through the beat, Sammy kicks things off in English, bringing plenty of player energy to his opening verse. But Fijiana makes her presence felt as soon as the hook arrives. She slides easily between sultry singer and sharp rapper, giving ‘LIKE THAT’ the kind of chemistry that makes the collaboration feel natural rather than forced.

That chemistry carries over to the video, where Sammy and Fijiana kick it on a basketball court and cruise around in a convertible. Everything about ‘LIKE THAT’ feels built for the last stretch of summer: windows down, speakers up, basketballs bouncing, and nowhere particularly urgent to be.

August might almost be over, but Yung Sammy and Fijiana just dropped a late entry into the song-of-the-summer conversation.
