A few years ago, the Wu-Tang Clan was the Hip Hop headliner at Clockenflap, Hong Kong’s homegrown mega-festival. Not only was it a great show with a live band and a majority of the members, but it also felt like a homecoming because the Staten Island crew sampled so many kung-fu movies from the golden era of Hong Kong cinema.

This Thursdays, curator Kim Ng will host an intimate vinyl listening session that explores Wu-Tang’s connection to Hong Kong via sampled movie sounds and dialogues at Garage at the Heath, beneath Chungking Mansions. As a singer/songwriter based in Hong Kong, Kim spent his formative years listening to Hip Hop closely. On Thursday, he’ll trace the link from the Pearl of the Orient to Shaolin Island.

By exploring key movies like Five Deadly Venoms, Shaolin and Wu Tang, The Mystery of Chessboxing, The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, and more, Kim will show how Hong Kong’s influence turned a crew of nine rappers into one of the most influential groups of all time.
