For the past 11 years, Tiny Desk Concert has hosted an annual contest to find an independent artist or group to showcase to the rest of the world. This year, they had more than 7,500 entries and only one winner - Ruby Ibarra. She won because she’s dope, and she submitted ‘Bakunawa,’ her twist on Filipino folklore and motherhood.

After announcing that she won on May 21, NPR put out her Tiny Desk Concert on May 29. Ruby and her seven-piece all-Filipino band start the show off with the chill-inducing song that got her here, ‘Bakunawa.’ The song is deep because it’s in three languages, English, Tagalog, and her native Bisaya. From there, she talks about the immigrant struggle in ‘7000,’ which is especially poignant in these recent days. She states, “Being human is not illegal. Immigrants have been here, lived here, and worked here. And this immigrant is here. From Tacloban City, Philippines, all the way to Washington, DC, my name is Ruby Ibarra.”

Her final song is a song she submitted to the contest in 2019 and didn’t get chosen, ‘Someday.’ The song is so emotional that it makes her mother, sitting in the front row, cry. After finally getting a chance to shine on one of the greatest online live performance spaces, Ruby Ibarra’s Tiny Desk Concert is etched in history.
