Meeting of Styles brings eye-catching graffiti to the East Coast of Taiwan [Gallery]
More than 50 walls were transformed into art
Hualien, Taiwan has had a string of bad luck over the last few years. Typhoons have been barrelling into eastern Taiwan city more than anywhere in Taiwan, and it sits atop the East Coast Rift Valley, home to numerous earthquakes, including a 7.2-magnitude quake that destroyed hiking trails, buildings, roads, and bridges. To top it off, in 2021, there was a serious train derailment when a construction vehicle ended up on train tracks, killing 49 people.
As a result, travelers have stayed away from a part of Taiwan that needs tourism to survive. Luckily, Meeting of Styles, a German graffiti-focused event, took place in Hualien this past weekend, as artists transformed 50 walls into eye-catching pieces, and MCs and DJs performed and brought some life back into a city decimated by disaster. The Mayor of Hualien even attended Meeting of Styles and declared the event lively and hoped that the murals would bring a new wave of tourism to the city.
