Keith Ape is one of the godfathers of modern Asian Hip Hop. When ‘It G Ma’ exploded in 2015, it helped push the region’s Rap scene onto a much bigger international stage. Eleven years later, Keith is back with a vengeance on ‘SmackDown!,’ and he sounds ready to bulldoze anything in his path.

Keith’s time in the spotlight hasn’t always been smooth. Over the years, periods of silence and concern surrounding his health have left fans wondering what was up with one of Asian Hip Hop’s most influential figures. On ‘SmackDown!,’ though, Keith sounds fully energized again. He attacks the track with the wild, unpredictable presence that made him stand out in the first place, while the video has him bouncing around with his crew like he’s been injected with new life.

With Playboi Carti, Don Toliver, and the wider Opium sound influencing so much of contemporary Rap, it would have made sense for Keith to simply dive headfirst into Rage. Instead, ‘SmackDown!’ feels distinctly like him. The production is dark without becoming gloomy, aggressive while still feeling strangely upbeat, and Keith sounds completely at home inside it.

The video matches that energy, landing somewhere between WWE chaos and an open-world video game rampage of GTA. More importantly, Keith looks like he’s having fun again. For an artist whose influence on Asian Hip Hop is impossible to ignore, ‘SmackDown!’ feels less like another comeback attempt and more like a genuine second wind.
