For many rappers, as soon as they get their first big paycheck, it’s time to go to the jewelry store and buy the biggest chain and medallion they can find. This is the status symbol. This is a big F you to society that had been keeping them in poverty their whole life. Gold. Diamonds. Ice. Bling. These are what dreams are made of.

Ice Cold is a Migos-produced four-part docuseries on YouTube that was released on July 9 about the history of these expensive accessories. 80’s icons like Slick Rick and Eric B and Rakim discuss the beginnings of big chains, while more modern rappers like A$AP Ferg, Migos, Lil Yachty, and Talib Kweli weigh in with their thoughts on the matter.

“This one is my favorite one right here,” said Slick Rick as he shows the camera a scales of justice piece which is about the size of a hand with the fingers spread out. “Because it’s so big.”

For Talib, he believes that if you live in America, you have to be a participant in the system of capitalism. “For a lot of people who have not been able to build the same type of generational wealth as white people in this country, the best way to show you’re a good capitalist is ‘Look how big and fly my chain is.’”

Besides rappers, Ice Cold features interviews with jewelers, jewelry makers, and even security guards tasked with making sure those chains don’t get stolen when artists jump into mosh pits in the middle of concerts.
